THE CHALLENGE
A long, narrow block with road frontage on three sides presented constraints and opportunities. The site’s visibility from multiple angles meant every elevation needed attention, while the compact footprint demanded efficient construction.
The design called for a linear form with an industrial-meets-bushland aesthetic – galvanised steel trellises extending from the walls, a cantilevered eastern façade over exposed blockwork and a mix of timber, steel and fibre cement cladding.
MAKING IT HAPPEN
We built a double-layer insulated concrete slab with hydronic heating, providing thermal mass and comfort from the ground up. The eastern façade cantilevers over a low concrete blockwork wall, creating a strong connection to the streetscape while lifting the home above the slope.
The galvanised steel privacy screens at the front and rear required precise fabrication and installation to achieve the design’s clean lines. Custom Heka window hoods and double-glazed windows complete the thermal envelope. The cladding combines radially sawn silvertop ash, dark grey corrugated steel and painted fibre cement.
THE RESULT
A compact, welcoming home that works with its site. The screened courtyards connect interior spaces to the garden, offering shade in summer and allowing natural light in during winter.
